Samara (known as Kuybyshev in 1935-90) was founded in 1586 after the enactment of Russian tsar Feodor Ioannovich as a \”ostrogue\” (the fortress for the guarding of river ways). The first place for the Samara fortress was founded on the right bank of the Samarka river which is a tributary of the Volga river. Later the area of the town increased to the left bank of the Volga river. Samara has been a town since 1688. Today Samara is a typical Russian city on the Volga river. It extends over 50 kilometres along the left bank of the great Russian river. Samara is a major industrial, scientific and cultural centre with a population of 1179200. There are a lot of educational establishments, museums and theatres in the town.
