Murmansk (known as Romanov-on-Murman before 1917), found in 1916, is the centre of Murmansk region and the largest Russian sea port in the Arctic Ocean. The Arctic nature of the peninsula is unique – thousands of lakes, the polar day in summer and polar night in winter, the bright orange-yellow carpet of plants covering the whole peninsula in autumn, and snow-covered mountains in winter. The Northern lights here are an unique natural phenomenon. The Museum of Local Lore and the Navy Museum are in Murmansk.
